Calculation of doses and formulas
The dose of a drug is the quantitative amount administered or taken by a patient for the intended medicinal effect.
The dose may be expressed as a single dose a daily dose or a total dose.
Number of doses= Total quantity
Size of the dose
In using the equation the units of weight or volume must be the same for the total quantity and size for the dose.
Example:-1 aif the dose of a drug is 200mg how many doses are contained in 10g?
Size of the drug is 200mg Number of dose=?
Size of dose
Note= 1gm=1000mg so 10gm of Total contained dose equal to 10000mg.
200mg
=50 dose
Calibration of droppers
The drop is used asa measure for small volumes of liquid medication.
The drop should not be used as a measure for a specific liquid medication until the volume it represents has been determined for that liquid.
The size of drop varies materially from one liquid to another.
This determination is made by calibrating the dispensing dropper.
Most manufactures include a specially calibrated dropper along with their prepackaged medications for use by patients in measuring dosage.
Example:- If a pharmacists counted 40 drops of a medication in filling a graduate cylinder to the 2.5ml mark, how many drops/ml did the dropper deliver?
Answer= 2.5ml=40 drops
1ml ?
=16 drops/ml
